Andhra Pradesh’s move to add 350 electric buses to its public transport fleet is definitely a laudable move. The state government has decided to upgrade its fleet through the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) program. Earlier the central government had directed all the states to float tenders for purchasing electric vehicles.
The state government has now released the tender on a gross cost contract basis and companies that are interested in bidding for the tender need to do so before October 14, 2019. The state government is planning to add 9 meter and 12 meter long buses to its fleet. As a part of this innovative scheme, it is also planning to set up a 11 kV substation. There are also plans for setting up charging stations and organising purchase of equipment for the operation and maintenance of electric buses.
Apart from Andra Pradesh, Odisha, Jammu & Kashmir and a handful of other states are also working towards implementing the FAME program. If the program is adopted widely across the country, then we can definitely see a huge change in the economy. The dependence on petroleum for public transportation will help relieve woes of sudden increase in ticket fares. It will also make a great contribution to the environment and go a long way in reducing pollution and global warming.
